Nokia N97 Symbian tidak berarti menunjukkan bahwa hanya Nokia N97 menggunakan sistem operasi Symbian, tetapi boleh dikatakan semua telepon selular Nokia menggunakan sistem operasi tersebut. Kecuali N900, termasuk produk akhir Nokia yang menggunakan sistem operasi Linux – Maemoo
Sistem operasi Symbian dalam Nokia N97 adalah software utama yang bertugas melakukan menejemen dan kontrol terhadap hardware secara langsung serta software-software lain sehingga software-software lain tersebut dapat berjalan.
