Nokia N96, Penerus N95 yang Mengawali Nokia N97
Nokia N96 memang merupakan generasi penerus dari N95 yang tidak hanya berbeda disain fisiknya tetapi juga ditampilkan berdasarkan tradisi selular. Yakni dengan inovasi dan fitur lebih disempurnakan dari pendahulunya. Posisi N96 dibawah Nokia N97 yang kemudian dikenal salah satu hand phone unggulan, juga memiliki spesifikasi setingkat di bawah Nokia N97.
Nokia N96 yang berdimensi 103 x 55 x 18 mm dengan berat 125gr. ini sudah diperkenalkan sejak Pebruari 2008, tetapi baru dirilis dan tersedia di pasaran pada bulan September di tahun yang sama. Hanya selang dua bulan kemudian, November 2008, Nokia N97 diperkenalkan kepada publik.
Meskipun baru dirilis di tahun berikutnya, yaitu pada bulan Juni 2009. Tak urung popularitas dan keunggulan teknologi N97 menimbulkan pengaruh yang cukup besar terhadap daur hidup Nokia N96 yang terhitung efektif hanya berlangsung selama 10 bulan.
Nokia N96 memiliki jaringan operasi 2G pada GSM / 900 / 1800 / 1900, ini tidak berbeda dengan Nokia N97. Tetapi pada jaringan 3G hanya pada HSDPA 900 / 2100 dan HSDPA 850 / 1900. Sedangkan Nokia N97 masih ditambah dengan jaringan 3G pada HSDPA 2100 dan HSDPA 2100 American version.
Sedangkan kameranya memiliki kemampuan sama dengan N97, yakni berkapasitas 5 MP dengan resolusi 2592×1944 pixels. Keduanya juga dilengkapi Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, LED flash. Hanya pada Nokia N96 minus video light dan Geo-tagging.
Meskipun memori internalnya belum menyamai N97, yakni 16 GB storage tapi jika ditambah melalui kartu microSD-nya yang mencapai 32 GB. Maka memory Nokia N96 akan sama besarnya dengan Nokia N97.
Sedangkan untuk pasokan daya, Nokia N96 berada di bawah N97 karena menggunakan battery standar, Li-Ion 950 mAh dengan kemampuan Waktu Siaga 220 jam (2G) / 192 jam (3G) dan Waktu Bicara 3 jam 40 menit (2G) / 2 jam 36 menit (3G). Sementara sumber daya Nokia N97 berasal dari baterei Li-Ion 1500 mAh yang memiliki kemampuan Waktu Siaga 432 jam (2G) / 408 jam (3G) dan Waktu Bicara 9,5 jam (2G) / 6 h (3G).
