Nokia N85 boleh dibilang sebagai satu-satunya N series yang memiliki “saudara kembar”. Saudara kembar N85 itu tak lain adalah Nokia N79. Pasalnya, N85 dan N79 dirilis secara bersamaan pada bulan Oktober 2008 dengan fitur dan spesifikasi mutakhir yang sama. Sementara Nokia N80 sudah dirilis dua tahun sebelumnya, 26 April 2006. Satu-satunya yang justru tidak menunjukkan bahwa mereka merupakan saudara kembar adalah tampilan fisiknya yang berbeda.Membicarakan mereka berdua sebenarnya cukup membicarakan salah satunya saja.
Jika Nokia N85 memilih tampilan fisik dengan disain dual slider, maka Nokia N79 memilih konstruksi dasar dengan disain candybar. Secara fisik N85 memiliki panjang 103 mm, lebar 50 mm dan ketebalan 16 mm dengan berat 128 gr.
Jika dibandingkan Nokia N79 yang berdimensi 110 x 49 x 15 mm dengan bobot 97 g. maka N85 nampak lebih kecil, tetapi memiliki bobot yang lebih berat dari N79.
Bisa jadi peluncuran dua hand phone dengan spesifikasi yang sama dari N Series ini merupakan strategi pemasaran Nokia, karena di saat itu disain dual slider dan disain candybar memiliki pasar yang berimbang. Bisa juga disaat itu diprediksi bakal ada kompetitor yang akan merilis hand phone masing-masing dengan dua disain yang berbeda tersebut. Karena persaingan di dunia industri kelas dunia tak bisa dilepaskan dari kegiatan spionase industri yang salah satu tugasnya adalah memata-matai strategi yang bakal diterapkan kompetitor.
Nokia N85 beroperasi dengan sistem Symbian 9.3 S60 rel. 3.2. Featurepack 2 yang didukung oleh saluran koneksi Wifi 802.11/g plus UPnP technology. Dibekali dengan jaringan 2G beroperasi pada frekuensi GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900, sedangkan jaringan 3G nya pada HSDPA 900 / 2100 dan HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 – American version.
Kamera utama Nokia N85 berkapasitas 5 MP dengan resolusi 2592×1944 pixels dan seperti biasa, produsen smartphone asal Finlandia ini sejak dulu menggunakan lensa Carl Zeiss, autofocus dan dilengkapi LED flash. Sedangkan memory internalnya berkapasitas 74 MB yang bisa ditambah melalui Card slot microSD sampai 8GB.
