Nokia N79 GPS adalah sistem pencarian posisi yang dilakukan secara global. GPS atau Global Positioning System menjadi salah satu pendukung fitur Nokia N79. Aplikasi ini bekerja dengan menggunakan sistem pemindaian melalui satelit.
Fasilitas GPS pada awalnya hanya dipergunakan untuk kepentingan militer. Dengan semakin berkembangnya teknologi, pemindaian melalui satelit bukan lagi menjadi monopoli militer. Banyak pihak telah memanfaatkan teknologi GPS untuk berbagai kepentingan, diantaranya adalah operator telepon selular sesuai dengan fitur yang tersedia pada sebuah smartphone.
Kini pengguna Nokia N79 juga bisa memanfaatkan teknologi pemindaian satelit melalui Ovi Maps untuk memilih jalan pintas guna mempercepat mencapai tujuan atau menghindari kemacetan lalu lintas dengan memilih jalan alternatif yang bisa dilihat dari Ovi Maps di layar Nokia N79.
Fitur milik Nokia N79 yang bekerja dengan sistem GPS lebih dikenal dengan istilah Ovi Maps. Fitur ini tidak tersedia secara default, melainkan harus didownload dari Ovi Store yang juga menyediakan beragam aplikasi lainnya, kemudian baru diinstall ke sistem Nokia N79.
Dalam perkembangannya, fitur GPS yang bisa menyelamatkan orang agar tidak kesasar itu menjadi salah satu aplikasi yang mutlak harus dimiliki oleh setiap smartphone. Tentu bukan karena alasan sekarang banyak orang yang kesasar, tetapi lebih cenderung prestise dan menjadi semacam salah satu kriteria smartphone.
Hal ini berbeda dengan fitur e-mail yang frekuensi penggunaannya semakin meningkat dan menggeser kebiasaan mengirim pesan melalui SMS. Penyempurnaan terhadap fitur tersebut bukan karena untuk memenuhi salah satu kriteria sebagai smartphone, tetapi lebih didorong oleh perubahan perilaku pengirim pesan yang cenderung lebih menyukai mengetikkan pesan mereka di atas Nokia N79 yang berkeyboard qwerty.
Efek samping dari penggunaan kedua fitur itu juga berbeda. Dengan Nokia N79 mengirim sebanyak-banyaknya e-mail, tak akan menyedot banyak biaya. Sebaliknya penggunaan fitur Ovi Maps memerlukan transfer data yang cukup besar, sehingga selain menyerap banyak biaya juga daya. Karena itu gunakan fasilitas GPS ini hanya jika benar-benar diperlukan.
