Android Nokia N97 adalah istilah yang muncul di internet ketika sistem operasi smartphone berbasis Android mulai masuk ke pasar selular. Kata kunci Android Nokia N97 umumnya digunakan pengguna internet untuk mencari apakah Nokia N97 yang baru dirilis juga menggunakan sistem operasi Android ?
Tentu saja keyword tersebut tidak pernah menemukan konten yang dimaksud, karena Nokia konsisten untuk tetap menggunakan sistem operasi Symbian.
Seperti halnya Symbian yang digunakan oleh Nokia N97, Android juga merupakan sistem operasional terbuka, sehingga bisa menerima aplikasi yang dirancang oleh para perancang aplikasi, kemudian bisa didownload pengguna lain. Masalah bagi Nokia dan kompetitor, kini banyak pengguna telepon selular yang beralih ke sistem operasi Android.
Kata Android berasal dari bahasa Yunani “andr-” yang berarti “laki-laki”, dan akhiran “-eides”, yang berarti “dari spesies; menyerupai” (dari “eidos”: spesies). Sehingga secara keseluruhan berarti : robot yang dibuat menyerupai manusia, baik secara tampilan maupun tingkah laku.
Android adalah software stack untuk perangkat mobile yang mencakup sistem operasi, middleware dan aplikasi kunci. Sistem operasi Android pada awalnya didisain oleh Andy Rubin.
Android merupakan salah satu sistem operasi pada mobile yang berbasis linux dan dikembangkan dari kernel linux v2.6 oleh Android Inc. sebuah perusahaan startup yang berbasis di Palo Alto, California, Amerika Serikat.
Sistem operasional Android mulai populer setelah Google pada Juli 2005, mengakuisisi Android, Inc. Pada saat itu timbul spekulasi bahwa Google sedang mengembangkan telepon selular bermerek Google, dan akan memasuki pasar seluler pada bulan Desember 2006. Sampai setahun lebih spekulasi itu tidak terbukti. Tetapi bulan September 2007, Google mengajukan beberapa aplikasi paten di bidang telepon seluler.
Sistem operasi Android mulai diperkenalkan secara global pada November 2008. Namun Android masih terbilang asing, karena telepon selular berbasis sistem opersi Android belum banyak terdapat di pasaran. Apalagi telepon selular dengan sistem operasi tersebut dijual dengan harga cukup mahal.
Untuk lebih mengembangkan Android dibentuklah Open Handset Alliance, konsorsium dari 34 perusahaan peranti keras, peranti lunak, dan telekomunikasi, diantaranya adalah HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcom, T-Mobile, dan Nvidia. Karena itu diprediksi sistem operasi ini akan menjadi kompetitor sistem operasi Symbian yang dipergunakan Nokia N97.
Akhirnya, Google meluncurkan smartphone Nexus yang menggunakan open source Android mobile sistem operasi. Perangkat ini diproduksi oleh Taiwan’s HTC Corporation, dan masuk ke pasar selular pada Januari 2010.
Selain itu, Google juga merilis kode-kode Android di bawah lisensi Apache, sebuah lisensi perangkat lunak dan standar terbuka perangkat seluler. Sehingga sekarang terdapat dua jenis distributor untuk sistem operasi tersebut. Pertama yang mendapat dukungan penuh dari Google atau Google Mail Services (GMS) dan kedua adalah yang benar-benar bebas distribusinya tanpa dukungan langsung Google atau dikenal sebagai Open Handset Distribution (OHD).
Popularitas Android tidak bisa dilepaskan dari popularitas Google. Karena Android memiliki konsep sebagai software berbasis kode komputer, maka telepon selular berbasis sistem operasi Android akan menjadi lebih cerdas jika selalu tersambung ke jaringan internet.
Smartphone berbasis Android ibarat sebuah komputer, kegunaan komputer itu akan optimal jika pengguna bisa memilih dan meng-install aplikasi sesuai kebutuhannya. Android yang memiliki akses langsung dengan Google sangat sesuai untuk pengguna internet. Apalagi jika sudah terbiasa menggunakan aplikasi khas dari Google, seperti Google Search, Google Talk, Gmail, Google Maps, dan Google Calendar.
Smartphone berbasis Android juga memiliki konektivitas lengkap: Wifi,
Bluetooth dan GPS. Aplikasi Android dapat didownload gratis, seperti Ovi Store pada Nokia N97.
Kelebihan lain adalah : Didukung oleh Google, sehingga lebih nyaman menggunakan seluruh fasilitas Google.
Stabil, tidak mudah error atau hang.
Aman dari virus karena berbasis Linux Kernel 2.6.
Aplikasi game 3 D sangat stabil dan mantap.
Harga relatif murah.
Jika Anda menggunakan telephone selular hanya untuk kepentingan komunikasi, maka Anda benar-benar smart untuk tidak menggunakan smartphone yang dilengkapi sistem untuk mengakses internet. Cukup gunakan handphone biasa !
