Sejarah dan Telepon Selular Berkamera Nokia yang Pertama
Telepon selular berkamera yang pertama kali dan masih merupakan prototipe sebenarnya sudah ada sejak tahun 1993. Daniel A Henderson, pencipta ponsel kamera itu memberinya nama The Intellect. Saat ini The Intelect masih dapat dilihat karena tersimpan dengan baik di Smithsonian, Museum Sejarah Amerika. The Intellect adalah ponsel dengan layar monokrom besar yang dapat menerima dan menampilkan gambar digital dan data video yang dikirim oleh pemancar nirkabel. Meskipun tidak diproduksi secara massal dan dipasarkan, tetapi The Intellect telah menginspirasi perkembangan teknologi dan protokol menuju terwujudnya ponsel kamera modern.
Ponsel kamera atau telepon selular berkamera merupakan sebuah istilah yang merujuk pada pengertian telepon selular yang dibangun menjadi satu dengan kamera digital. Sehingga memungkinkan untuk merekam suatu peristiwa atau obyek, menyimpannya, dan membaginya dengan perangkat lain dan pengguna melalui teknologi komunikasi nirkabel.
Tetapi selama beberata tahun setelah ditemukannya The Intellect, meskipun ada banyak videophones dan kamera yang mencakup teknologi komunikasi, ternyata tidak ada satu pun yang berfokus pada integrasi dengan internet nirkabel yang memungkinkan penggunanya bisa berbagi foto dengan pengguna lainnya. Di antaranya terdapat Videophone Apple / PDA yang dirilis pada tahun 1995. Ada beberapa kamera digital dengan kemampuan transmisi telepon selular yang ditunjukkan oleh perusahaan-perusahaan seperti Kodak dan Olympus di awal 1990-an .Selain itu juga kamera digital dengan telepon selular yang dirancang oleh Shosaku Kawashima dari Canon di Jepang pada Mei 1997.
Sampai akhirnya pada bulan Juni 1997 Phillippe Kahn memasukkan kamera mini ke telepon genggamnya Motorola, sehingga ia bisa mengambil gambar bayi perempuannya, Sophie yang baru lahir dan mengirimkan gambar tersebut ke seluruh keluarga dan teman-teman dekatnya.
Sejak itu setiap orang berobsesi untuk mengirim gambar-gambar keluarganya atau obyek menarik yang ditemuinya di perjalanan untuk keluarga mereka di rumah. Obsesi ini merupakan peluang pasar yang sangat potensial bagi para produsen telepon selular. Mulai saat itu pula mereka melakukan berbagai penelitian dan pengembangan agar dapat memproduksi massal sebuah telepon selular berkamera, sehingga penggunanya dapat mengirim foto-foto langsung dari ponsel mereka.
Ponsel kamera pertama di dunia dirilis pada bulan November 2000 oleh Sharp, operator seluler terkemuka di Jepang dan anggota dari Grup Vodafone yang diberi nama Sharp J-SH04. Telepon selular pertama tersebut dilengkapi dengan fitur sensor 110.000-pixel yang terintegrasi dengan gambar CMOS untuk mengambil foto digital.
Sedangkan model selanjutnya, Sharp J-SH05 juga menjadi telepon selular kamera yang pertama dilengkapi dengan aplikasi sebuah LCD TFT 65.536 warna semi-transmissive. Kedua model yang didistribusikan J-Phone Co Ltd itu ikut mengangkat nama Sharp di pasar ponsel internasional.
Dalam sejarah ponsel kamera ini, Nokia memang bukan termasuk pelopor karena ponsel kameranya yang pertama Nokia 7650 baru dirilis pada kwartal kedua tahun 2002. Nokia 7650 juga merupakan smartphone pertama Nokia dengan OS Symbian (versi 6.1).
Pada tahun 2003, jumlah ponsel berkamera yang terjual di seluruh dunia lebih dari kamera digital yang berdiri sendiri. Setahun kemudian, Nokia menjadi merek kamera digital yang paling banyak terjual di dunia. Pada tahun 2006, setengah dari ponsel di dunia merupakan ponsel yang dilengkapi dengan kamera.
Pada tahun 2008, Nokia menjual ponsel berkamera lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan Kodak yang menjual film untuk kamera konvensional. Di saat itu Nokia tercatat sebagai produsen terbesar dari setiap jenis kamera.
Akibat revolusi yang terjadi di dunia teknologi selular tersebut, dua dari empat perusahaan kamera raksasa, Konica dan Minolta harus keluar dari core bisnis mereka.
